Abstract:

The training, which includes a retreat style fifteen credit hour experiential workshop, is for mental health professionals trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), and will introduce participants to Therapeutic Fly-fishing with EMDR (TF-EMDR)℠. Through an Adventure-Based Counseling lens and following the Standard EMDR Protocol, Western and Japanese-style fly-fishing models are utilized to engage Eye Movements and Resourcing. Participants will learn nature-based Resource Development & Installation activities, including mindfulness, ego-state, and nervous system-based approaches, and will engage in casting lessons and didactic EMDR practice with fly-fishing to gain confidence and understand characteristics of using the EMDR Standard Protocol in a natural setting.

This workshop, conducted completely outside, provides an overview of current Therapeutic Fly-fishing activities, commonly facilitated without an integration to a formal therapeutic modality and by lay-people or professionals without clinical mental health training. It will provide the rationale for improving this area with the integration of evidence-based trauma therapies, such as EMDR, as done by properly trained trauma treatment professionals. Ethical and legal issues will be discussed, as will an overview of clients who might benefit from Therapeutic Fly-fishing with EMDR (TF-EMDR)℠. Participants will heavily engage in nature-based practicum, and creative discussions about why and how to integrate TF-EMDR and nature-based EMDR into treatment programs. Participants will begin to develop a plan for how to integrate TF-EMDR into their own practice setting. Upon completion of this workshop, EMDR Trained mental health professionals will have met the educational requirements for basic professional certification in Therapeutic Fly-fishing with EMDR (TF-EMDR)℠.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the rationale for improving upon traditional therapeutic fly-fishing for trauma-related conditions, by integrating qualified mental health professionals who are fully trained in providing Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

  • Understand how to help clients integrate principles of Therapeutic Fly-fishing with EMDR (TF-EMDR) SM throughout the 8-phases of EMDR, and as personal practice for continued integration within the AIP model.

  • Understand and practice the utilization of traditional and fixed line fly-fishing equipment to facilitate an integrative and nature-based approach to EMDR Therapy.
